Kostas Roumeliotis
Talented Sax Player and Musician
Kostas is an extremely talented musician. Although he is able to play many instruments at a professional level, the saxophone was his first love and the instrument he is most recognized for. Kostas loves many styles of music, but studied and earned a degree in Jazz. It is this education that gives him his fluid and virtuosic ability. His life and background are what have given him his unique flavor and style.
Over the past decade Kostas has worked his way to the top of the House Music scene in Vancouver. House music, meaning that he plays along with DJ's to electronic music. He has played with all the top Vancouver DJ's and at all the city's best clubs. The best DJ's/promoters/performers will all tell you that he provides a certain unique voice to the music that only he can provide. Many instrumentalists play with DJ's, but making it sound like they are part of the recording is something different.
Kostas has the ability to hear each song and accompany it in a way that people think that it is part of the song. The trick, he says, is to be able to play "less". There is always time to play out and let the crowd enjoy the sax, but you can't get too excited and "overplay". A strong musical knowledge is also required to be able to hear the right scales and notes to go with the music being played. This is a part of his experience and a musical strength of his.
His greek background has also given him an ear for other sounds. Many times people are surprised to hear cool Middle Eastern/Mediterranean type sounds thrown over top of a song. Plain and simple, Kostas' level of experience makes him able to provide a palette of sounds that others aren't even able to dream of.
Besides playing House music, Kostas has always loved music in general. From Rock music to Jazz to Folk, he can talk about anything from the musicians in the bands to the instruments they used. Music is his passion. When he isn't playing, he is always listening or going to see bands perform live.
As a musician, Kostas has had the honor to play with many talented musicians. He has shared the stage with musicians/artists like Seamus Blake, Brad Turner, Kenny Colman, Gene Farris, Mark Doyle, and Paul Anka.
Kostas plays the drums extremely well and also plays Guitar/Keys/Bass. In 2007 Kostas even recorded a cd of original music called "this is" under his nickname - kostakithegreek. On the album he plays all instruments and sings.
Kostas' Day job sees him teaching band at seven elementary schools for his local school district. Spending time making music all day long is a dream job and at times extremely rewarding. It is hard work teaching children from scratch, but the thought of even just a few of those kids going on to pursue music is a reward in itself.
As a dedicated husband and father of twins, his life is extremely busy and rewarding. To have the bonus of getting to perform regularly in his life is an honor and privilege. Music has always been and will continue to be a part of the path for Kostas.
